I know many of you giggle and simply don't believe me when I say that it is cold here. It has been a VERY cold Florida winter. It really has. Right Florida girls? And of course I know that our cold is not your cold - my dear northern sisters and brothers who have been enduring the kind of cold weather that I cannot even imagine. How do you do it? When we have these temperatures, I can hardly bear it. And when it was way colder than this I couldn't bear it. I know, I know - what a wimp. I used to be the one who NEVER got cold and never wore a jacket and would laugh and laugh at my poor sis when she would shiver and shake during our cold snaps. Now that is me - shivering and shaking. And yes she just looks at me and wants to laugh but is the nicer sister so she doesn't. Maybe it is because we live in an old house, or maybe it is because I'm another year older, but this year the cold invaded my body and hasn't left. Brrrrrr. My granny blankets have come in very handy. Miss Maggie is often found buried in them too. I think we have a few more days of coldness before we can finally put our blankets away for the season.
Oh yea. I forgot. I don't put them away. I leave them out. I love them too much.
;-)
Totally off topic but comes to mind when I am thinking of what I can't bear ...
The pear. I can't bear the pear.
I know, I know. I know this is ridiculous too. Who wouldn't like a beautiful and innocent pear?
Me.
I think I've shared this with you before. I have never liked them. I will never like them. When I have tried to eat them, they literally sent chills up my spine.
I'm serious.
Just like the cold weather.
So here's to warmer days ahead and flowers and all things SPRING ...
And no pears.
xo,
Kim
I am right there with you about the pear. I love how they look in paintings, sitting in a bowl, or just lined across a table on a piece of lace, but I do not like to eat them! Not even when they have been sliced and diced and put in a snack pack!
Hope the sun warms you up soon!

Baby it's cold outside. Kim you are so right. It is so hard to believe that you can be in" this old house " with 4 walls , an insulated attic and a floor and it can only be 5* warmer than the temperature outside. Last week we had a speaker @ the neighborhood meeting and he said it's because our homes are off the ground and the cold just wraps around the house ! If walls could talk ! We'll probably wake up one morning and find that we lost spring and it will be 90* again. LOL!

I am from Indiana and yes, its cold down here. I haven't been in the pool, haven't had on shorts, or my bathing suit. I wished I had brought my crocheted afghans with me. I should have brought more long pants/long shirts. This is like our "Spring" in Indiana and I don't like it. DH and I are seriously thinking of making Florida our permanent residence.
Take care Kim - that bug does last a long time and this weather doesn't help. LOL

Kim, I have had a really hard time with the cold this year, too here in Georgia. Just way too cold this year. The weather man said our average temp this time of year should be 62 and it was 42 yesterday. Oh, please 62 come here. I hate pears, too. I thought I was the only one. So glad to find I am not alone in this. I cannot stand the texture of them. Like eating grit!!
Posted by: Kim Nichols | March 04, 2010 at 08:51 AM
I don't like to eat pears much either. I will have one every once in a while but that's about it ... what I absolutely cannot abide are cooked pears.
Posted by: Loree | March 04, 2010 at 08:59 AM
It could be you are always cold because of your low body fat content. Yep, that's what I say about myself and it sounds great, doesn't it?
But I do love pears -- to eat and to look at. Just trying to get motivated to get to the gym this morning so I'm not "pear" shaped. But you see I'm on the computer instead. Maybe later.

Hi Kim,
I am in FLORIDA too and it's colder than I thought it would be for this long! Wearing a sweater inside with the heat ON!
I have those same plates that your pear was on-LOVE them.
I think they are Corelle? But I have a tea pot and a tall coffee pot that looks just like them and they are not Corelle. I love the photos of Miss Maggie when she is under the blankets looking out-older post I believe.
I loved the photos of YOUR GW and P.O.
Thanks, JolieAnne

My husband and I decided the older we get, the less we like the cold too...and we have several months of it in MN. Love the beautiful white snow.....but by March, it's not so beautiful anymore :-) We've had a few days now of high 30's with the promise of spring right around the corner.

Kim, I am soooo over this weather. I am absolutely miserable. Like you said i don't know if it is age or what but I am miserable with the cold. My husband is tired of hearing about it. My shoulders ache from hunching them up around my ears. I only own 1 pair of closed toed shoes and have been wearing them since Christmas. I want to wear sandals. Enough complaining. Love your blog and read it everyday. Just couldn't resist a comment on the cold.

Kim:
Way up here in the north it is cold. I am constantly putting the gas fireplace on and standing in front of it to warm my bones, but I've always been like that, even when I was a youngster. It has been 35* around here for the past few days and we've been told that Sunday will be 46* - compared to the below freezing temps we endure in the winter months, it feels down right balmy.
Stay warm, cuddle with maggie
Have a great day
PS Don't much like pears either, but love those afghans!

I know what you mean! The older I get, the harder it is for me to stay warm. It has been a long cold winter here in Illinois, but I think we are almost out of the woods. Spring is coming! I hate pears too! Don't know why, just do! I hope you have a great day!

Well I have to say that pears aren't usually on my grocery list either. I don't dislike them but I don't crave them. I do like canned pears but then you got the whole sugar thing.
And I love your granny blankets, in fact just ordered one from etsy. Cheers to the granny blankets!!

Have you had pear cobbler? Tastes like apple cobbler but not as sweet. I think you would like it! Or sliced pears dipped in chocolate....or just dip your finger in chocolate and throw the pear away.....
My grandaughter loves pears like candy. She will eat them in Sams before they even make it to the checkout counter!
Have a beautiful day and thanks for making my day more beautiful already with your blog.....Sheila

Haha, you crack me up, Kim.
I will say this: when it snows (and it has so much this beautiful winter) it means it is WARMER than most winters...........it is the clear skies and no snow winters that get to much much much below zero.
So the clouds and snow means warmer, if that makes sense.
I sit here wrapped up with a space heater here at my feet and understand.
And definately think you not feeling well for awhile is the true reaosn you have a chill, it IS in your bones.
This too shall pass.
Until then, love those granny blankies and your warm and cuddly Mags.

Kim~~~
I think about all of you gals in the South experiencing this cold weather that you aren't used to and my heart really does go out. We become accustomed to our climate and like to know what to expect... but seriously, having lived in Chicago all my life, the cold is just normal. And the heat and humidity in the summer is normal. I think we all just go with the flow.
If you came to the Midwest I would make sure you were properly dressed for indoors and outdoors and I don't think you would have a problem. And then we would do fun things in the snow and drink a lot of hot cocoa in front of the fire and you would have the biggest smile. I guess it is all in how you look at it.
Happy Thursday!!

I would agree it was cool, gray, overcast, windy some days and rainy off and on while we were in Florida late January early February. When my Dad lived in Ohio he could go outside with a light jacket in the middle of winter. But after retiring to Florida after a few years any cold weather bothered him too. I think one's blood thins out if that is possible. It's in the low 40s here in SE PA today and the sun is shining. Still have snow on the ground. We're off to a RV Show today. We haven't been to one in quite awhile. By the way I love the colors in your granny square throws. Now I'm going to have to go out and get more yarn - which I love to do. Have a nice day Kim and here's hoping you warm up.

You're not the only one that doesn't like pears--they're too grainy and mushy for me, too!
And if it makes you feel happier, I noticed my wild rose bushes and hydrangeas have little fisted up buds ALL OVER them yesterday, so I think Spring is coming soon and I think my roses can't wait either---YAY!

Well Miss Kim, we on the other hand are having a balmy 50 degrees here in Ontario, Canada. It's so very unusual for this time of year. I remember my birthday month with 8 foot snow banks all the time!!
Now Fla. best warm up really fast. Leaving in only 9 sleeps. I guess I should bring my UGGS just in case and my woolies. I just want to hug all my sweet friends. Oh I know your not available dear Kim, but maybe next time.
Sending warm hugs...and I do like pears : )

Kim,
I think it has been a cold winter everywhere!! And I'm so over all this snow. Here in Ohio, it is going to get up near 50 degrees in a few days and hopefully all this white stuff on the ground will have melted away.
I don't like to eat pears either, but I do like to decorate with them. Just picked up a vintage bowl with a pear design on it at the GW and I just love it.

I would LOVE to be in your cold right now. This weekend, we might experience highs in the thirties. YES! Who knows, though - we have a 70 percent chance for snow too!
At least the sun is shining and the birds are singing. And lets not forget, someone's shoe print, in the front yard, melted and grass is peaking up at me! It is glorious!
But, cold is cold, wherever you are. So, stay warm.

You are just too cute, dearest Kim. I live more northerly than most and I just happen to love Winter, if I didn't I would be miserable, too. It's 26 Deg. Farenheit today and that is warmer than the normal for this time of year. It's too warm to go for a hard walk with a heavy coat on. I went skating yesterday at an outdoor rink and I was sweating in my Down jacket. I even had to take my gloves off. I think it may depend on what you are used to.
Stay warm, my southern friend, Cindy

I'm not very fond of pears, but I really dislike rhubarb. I have never been able to understand why anyone would like it. Granny blankets are perfectly wonderful. There is nothing better than snuggling up in one on a cold evening. A few years ago I bought a very cute red fleece blanket covered with little scotties. My plan was to keep it in my jeep so that when the top is down and we are out on a cool evening, I can wrap the fleece blanket around my shoulders. I think that only happened once. Bentley discovered it and claimed it for his own. Why not? it has little scotties on it after all. Stay warm and cozy and stay away from pears!
Love,
Susan and Bentley

I wrap myself in an afgan that my Mom made me every cold winter night, while watching TV.......We're in the Atlanta area, and I have to admit I too have become a bit of a Wimp! Hoping for warmer weather soon! As for pears......I'm more of a Strawberry person!!!

I, along with the others, strongly dislike pears. I have always wondered why God greated a beautiful fruit & put sand in them? That what I have wondered asa child. I force myself to eat many fruits, but pears will never be one.
Beautiful pictures.

Kim, right there with you on this cold weather. I am in Lakeland also. As for the pear, a few years ago when I turned 60, I decided to eat my first pair since early childhood. It was a beautiful yellow Bartlett with a pink rosy blush. It was wonderful; almost perfume-like. I don't eat them often, but when I do, I truly enjoy them. There is still hope. ;)

Hi Kim! I just ran across your delightful Blog yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed seeing all the things that you love! Absolutely gorgeous on all counts :) I'm a FL gal ... well, actually I'm a TN gal who ended up in FL 30 years ago; and honey it has been the coldest winter we've ever had down South! Quite unbelievable actually. I heard this week that it's all due to the mild Hurricane Season we had last year. If that's true, I'll take these cooler temps over a Hurricane any day of the year :) Besides, being a quilter, it's so Heavenly to be able to bundle up in a comfy quilt :) God Bless!

I'll just say two things {maybe only two things, but can't promise}...I hate to be cold and I hate pears. I guess we have other things in common besides loving to decorate our homes. I get very anxious this time of year for spring to arrive, but I have to be very careful what I wish for because summer comes rushing up beside spring very quickly and then we are all wishing for cooler temps. Funny how we are that way, isn't it?
Please come join my Tea Party at BellaCasa this evening. I can't wait to see your Tea Party table setting.

I hate pears that are not totally ripe, then they are sweet and juicy! I guess if your body is used to warmth all they time a bit of cold must feel awfull. Wait til you get my age and your body goes through the hot flashes...It has been a cold winter though and I am dieing for warmth!!! Come say hi :D

Your e-mail was a delight to see in my in box this morning. It makes me smile to know I am going somewhere that takes me away from here as long as I need to be taken. It has been chilly here. We are lucky in the area that we live in California. It is colder now with rain here and snow in the mountains. I live in my sweats and bathrobe a lot of the time. I love a blanket over me when it is chilly. I do love pears. Your photos remind me of how much I love them, though, the stores do not carry very good ones. Must go to the Farmers Market for those. Enjoy your day and stay nice and warm in your beautiful home.

It is cold outside! I'm to live in Florida and in an old house and I just can't get warm. And there are even times when it seems warmer outside than in my house. I don't know how many times I've asked my poor husband, are you sure the heat is working properly! :) I always thought I liked the cold weather (the clothes are the best) but I guess I only really liked to visit it! Love your blog an pictures. Thank you! Kim

Hi, Kim,
I've lived in middle TN all my life and the cold has been harder on me this year, too. Now, do you really think it's because we're a year older. I hadn't thought of that! Anyway, let me say that seeing your email in my box is the bright spot in my day. And I am looking forward to Spring.....daffodils, tulips, green grass. Oh, yeah!
Now that poor little pear! If I could, I would gladly take it off your hands. It just needs another day or two on the counter and then it will be just right....sweet, and mellow, and juicy. Just Right!
Keep warm in your granny blankets.

LOL, Kim. I live in New York, transplanted from Tennessee. You are right; it's very cold here! Your nights are like our days, but I love it! When I moved here, I was excited to think about all the snow I would see. Well, truth being said, there is more snow here than is usually in Tennessee, but I am still disappointed! Of course, I am excited about spring and the flowers too, as all seasons have their time. :)And I'll take your pear that you don't want. My husband and I are raw fooding, and we haven't met a fruit we don't like. :) My husband is allergic to the seeds in strawberries and kiwis, but he does like them.

My husband was just telling me about how much colder of a winter Florida has had. We, in California, are also having a cold winter! I can't remember when days have been in the 30's here... It's terrible. I can't imagine living somewhere like Minnesota! BRRRRR!
I also don't like pears. I think it's the grainy texture and also they just aren't as sweet as apples. No bueno. Also, where did you get your lamp shade?? I love it!!
Posted by: Ashley Schott | March 04, 2010 at 01:14 PM
Same thing here in the San Francisco bay area, Kim. For the past 3 summers, we've had temps over 90 degrees which is very bizarre, but now seems to be the norm. Most of us don't have a.c. because we never needed it, so it's pretty sluggish around here for about 3 weeks each summer.
I know that is nothing compared to full summers of heat WITH humidity but it's our cross to bear and is awful nonetheless.
And the weirdest situation is that sometimes when it 50 degrees in winter (warm for most people but quite cold for us) I can smell ice in the air....????????????? Weird but true.
Brrrrrrrrrrrrr......................

Hey, Kim and "Y'all"...I'm in Central FL and spent 27 yrs of my youth in NW IN near Chicago. Needless to say, I know cold. And this winter in FL is cold! The temps they are stating are not appearing on MY outdoor thermometer! Much less the wind chill factor! That's right, wind chill! We have it bad. Our poor yard that I landscaped personally for a whole year is devastated. Never so brown. But, the blue skies bring hope. Knitting under my electric blanket at night with my hot cocoa has become a new pattern for me that I enjoy. The good part is my husband hasn't had to mow the grass for over 3 months, leaving much more time to do things together we enjoy on his weekends off. My sister in Denver and my daughter in Laramie Wyoming keep making fun of us for complaining about being cold. My husband says we have "Post Traumatic Chill Disorder". We can't warm up. Red and yellow are great colors to warm you up. Your efforts in your home are just lovely. Thanks for sharing! Rhonda

Kim,
I have a low thyroid hormone and one of the symptoms is being cold as the thyroid hormone helps to regulate our body temp. The lab test is called TSH. I take a thyroid hormone pill daily. Doctors order this test routinely for patients after a certain age.
So pears are your nemesis! I was just thinking yesterday that there was nothing you did not like. Now we know. I can not tolerate okra or turnips. I know people who love both.
I do love the begonia in the blue pot.

Hey Kim, I know what you mean - we have had enough cold here in southwest Georgia! It even snowed here several weeks ago. We had enough of the white stuff to play in, make snowmen and have a snowball fight. It has been a real winter in the south this year. I open my closet and my capri pants are calling out to me and I'm ready to get them out! Here's to a nice, warm and sunny weekend. Lisa

That's more pears for me then! You have to wait until they are ripe, or they are kinda yucky! ;) I live in northern Minnesota, and I won't even tell you about how cold it gets here, but it's over 30 degrees today and the sun is shining and melt-melt-melting away our gobs of snow! When I get chilled I just keep on drinking something hot...and never ever let my feet get cold because then it's impossible to warm up!

Hmmmm, I'm not sure where you can go where it would be warmer, (Arizona?), but I would LOVE your weather. And pears, really truley? You hate them? I am on such a pear kick right now, have you tried COmice pears? They smell like hyacinths and taste like a flower garden...in a good way. But that's ok Kim. I still love ya, and you have some nice warm weather coming up:>) Here's to spring!

I think it's because Florida has a damp, wet, windy kind of cold. That's my story and I'm sticking to it! PS: I love pears ;)

I believe this winter has been a struggle all over the world. I'm in Atlanta at the moment visiting my daughter all the way from Europe and this week we even got a day of snow which to me was absolutely fantastic as I can't even recall the last time I had seen it! When it comes to pears perhaps the people that don't like them haven't yet tasted the right ones. I can't say it's my favorite fruit but I've eaten pears that are so juicy and with such a pleasant aroma that noone and I mean noone would turn them down. A wonderful and warm week end for everyone!
Posted by: Teresa Nesler | March 04, 2010 at 06:39 PM
Hi Kim, I had to laugh about your 'distaste' of pears. I used to love them, but no longer. I don't know what happened!
Posted by: Joy | March 04, 2010 at 06:41 PM
Kim, pears in the store are never, ever ripe and by the time, they are...they are rotten!!
I grew up eating them from the tree in the yard-hard as a rock! No, they aren't my favorite either! I am allergic to mangos. We all have something different, I guess. On the cold, if it gets below 65 here...I am freezing! I think it is lack of the right hormones since I am getting older. Keep warm!

You silly! Pears are pearicious!
I hated asparagus for what seemed like....forever, but then I tried them on a darn and found that they were asparagolicious.
A beautiful bowl of nice green pears would look lovely on your new/old yellow "table" cloth. You can serve up some asparagus too.
P.S. I live in pear country. Can you tell?

I'm so glad many of you don't like pears, because that leaves lots and lots for ME! Yum, poached gingered pears, pears in winter-fruit salad with swiss cheese and craisins, pears in the hand eaten right off the tree. I love me my Barlett's!
We were cold in Southern California at fifty degrees but now that we're in Reno I stand outside in my nightie while my dogs do their business when it's a degree or two above freezing. Go figure!

If I can be serious for a moment. I think when we live in warmer climates our bodies slowly adjust somewhat to the colder temperatures. For instance - if it gets cold really fast we're chilled to the bone. bBut it cools off gradually, usually, and we slowly adjust to it. Equally - when it warms up really fast, like from the 50s and 60s to 90s, we just about die from the heat, it all takes some getting used to. Good chatting with you, and stay warm. Diane

Me, again. I made a mistake in the above post. In the first sentence I meant to say we who live in COLDER climates. Sorry.

Me Too! I think pears are gross! It's the texture. So grainy! Blech! I do like the way they look and smell though.
Stay Warm!! :)

All I want to do is sleep and not eat. And to think we planned the bus trip to Mt. Dora FRI and probably Patchwork Pig (Sat) downtown Lakeland this weekend. Who would have thought it would be freezing and record breaking temps. YIKES! However, the weather person last night said that it will be 'below average' all the way through MAY!!! I'm in So. FL. MAY??? I'm looking up Cuddl Duds as soon as I get back. Blessings, Janet

I'm a FLORIDA GIRL and am also sick of this weather. I could almost bear the cold but hate the gloominess (no sun). I don't know how people up north deal with no sun-depressing.
Now pears - love them , the juicier the better.

Dearest Kim, I want to tell you that i have quoted you on my latest blog entry. in my post i say that you are the "queen of uniqueness". i quoted you saying that we need to decorate for our selves not for our neighbors, etc. & etc. Then you said we needed to claim our place on this earth. that really struck a chord with me and that is exactly what i have been doing! Thank you for being YOU and for encouraging us to be ourselves. Love ya, cindy s

I know what you mean Kim, I would never make it in a snowy state. Here in California I find that I whine when the temps drop below 75! Cheers to a long summer with bare feet and tall glasses of sweet tea!
XO,
Dena

I spent 32 of my years in Florida so I know exactly what you mean. I always said that when it is cold there, it is COLD. When I was young we would put our clothes in the dryer in the morning before putting them on. We didn't have much heat in that house and it didn't have insulation and had cold terrazzo floors!! Hang in there -- it won't be much longer. (Just wondering why you even had that pear in your house!)

I think pears are icky all the way around but I love the cold weather. I come alive in winter and live for clear nights when you can see the rings around the moon, however, I don't do snow! I like snow about as much as I like pears. Nice to look at but no thanks!. Here's wishing you warm and cozy nights under "granny's" homemade goodness!

I am near Ocala FL and I hear you about the COLD here this winter. I always enjoy the cooler weather but this has just seemed to lag on and on this winter.

Here's Mom's theory and we all know that Mom is always right. (At least that's what she's told me all my life!) As we age, our skin gets thinner. There goes all that lovely insulation and yes, we do feel the cold much more.
You and your pear thing crack me up. Check out my latest post about what I hate!!! Full body shiver NOT induced by cold temps!

OMG, that was so funny because I've been freezing, too. Here in Georgia it isn't as bad as other places and I'm never cold.
I think there is hope for spring, my daffys have green shoots searching for warmth.
About those pears-they are pretty, but I've never liked them either. I love so many different fruits. The only pear I've ever liked was very thinly sliced, grilled and added to a salad.

Kim,
I have that built in ("52") year old heating system called the big M working for me. It comes in flashes but it sure does warm you up. Sometimes I go out on the porch in the middle of the night just to cool off. Believe me I never would have thought I would be doing that. I was always cold. See, everything has it's good points.
As for pears. I love them if they are really ripe. They are so juicy and sweet.
Your pictures are so cute. Love the granny blankets.
You are so cute Kim.
Love,
Kate

I hear ya on the pear thing girl! I have a love/hate relationship with them. How can something so pretty with such a fabulous shape and warm colour taste so foul???
Love your blog! Love your photos even more!
Take care sweetie! xoxo

Great Post ~
I too cannot eat pears...however, I do agree that they are such a pretty fruit...just not pretty enough for me to eat.
And now...off to the store to buy some apples...those I could eat till the cows come home.
Have a great weekend.

It was colder here in south FL this morning than it was in NYC! Now something is definitely wrong with this picture. I am so sick of dressing in layers, and am longing to wear flip flops and sandals again. Who knew that I'd get so much use here in FL out of the puffy jacket I bought to wear to visit my daughter in NY? I have to wear it just to take the dogs outside in the morning! Kim, have you tried ripe, organic pears? You might just like them!

I am with you girl. I am a Florida girl and so very weary of the cold dreary days. We live in an older home and it just doesn't get warm. I am SO ready for warm sunshiny days.

Too funny! :)
I find not leaving the house in the winter, helps. ;) My neighbor saw me out the other day and said, "Dale's out!" I told her not for long! ;)
I've had canned pears and pears poached in wine... well, I say I've had them... ;)

Kim, You are killing me with your "cold weather" tales! When it is 50 here this time of year, everyone is doing the happy dance! I think all that heat and living in Florida all your life has "made your blood thin" as they say around here. Love ya~~~~~~

Can I tell you how much I LOVE your painting of Zinnias that appears in one of the pics above? I love it so much I feel like having a small tantrum that I can't have it. Just kidding, but I hope you don't mind if I try and paint a copy of it for myself. Speaking of pears and paintings. I don't like to eat pears as much as I like to look at them. And in the new issue of Country Almanac there are some tantrum producing paintings of pears. Oh the colors and the frames! Even a pear hater would have to think twice. As always you inspire me. Love your home, love your style but I especially love you. Chris M.
