Now that I've spent the weekend cleaning and painting my dollhouse, I am happy to report that it is all ready for my dollhouse family to move in! Yay!
Oh, wait - I don't have a dollhouse family!
;-)
Well, I MUST adopt one!
Anywho - as you can see, I decided to paint the exterior of my dollhouse in very familiar colors ...
And while I haven't painted or wallpapered the inside of the house - yet - everything is spic & span ready for the dollhouse family-to-be!
See the red frame on the mantel?
That's a refrigerator magnet!
I painted most of the dollhouse furniture that I've been collecting for the past couple of years. I used the same paints that I use on my real furniture. I've found these pieces at Goodwill, yard sales, and thrift shops. All of them were VERY inexpensive. The adorable vintage chairs and love seats are Ebay finds, as was the dollhouse itself.
And a dingy brass hat rack got a coat of paint too - in red, of course! ;-)
Now, hopefully the dollhouse family won't mind eating out for awhile, until I can find a stove, a sink, and a refrigerator! At least they will have a place to eat and a place to write their shopping list!
And I also hope that the family doesn't mind that there is no bathroom yet either. ;-) Maybe the cozy bedroom will help to make up for it!
By the way, hankies make lovely coverlets - don't you think?
There may not be a bathroom, or a working kitchen, or window panes, or curtains, but there ARE daisies ...
And cozy chairs ...
I hope the family is VERY happy spending their days AND nights here.
I know that I've been very happy playing with my dollhouse - FINALLY!
I never had one growing up - so this is great fun and I HIGHLY recommend YOU treating yourself to a dollhouse too. You can make it be whatever you want it to be - the ideas are endless!
Let's see... I'm thinking aprons, candles, books, curtains, food for the family, oh and yes - a little dog too.
;-)
Kim
Oh Kim, How sweet it is! How much fun you have had working for the day when you could put it all together. It is so much better than any doll house anyone could purchase. A miniature Daisy cottage.
Thanks for sharing it with us.

Oh my gosh - I think that might just be the cutest thing I've ever seen! I can't wait to see how it continues to unfold. Very clever use of your hankie too. Enjoy.

Kim, you've inspired me to bring my dollhouses (yes, plural) down from the attic! I had wanted to do this anyway, and put them all on top of the armoire in our bedroom, with a string of white lights in them, to leave on at night. Although now you make me want them where I could play with them, and then nothing would get done around the house! I love how you have furnished yours, and I am so in love with that blue sofa with the red flowers! I hope you will show the whole house, and where you put it in your home. Oh, it's all just magical!

I love it! I just purchased a new "old" dollhouse on my vacation and can't wait to get started decorating. I love all of the colors in your house. Thanks for the inspiration.....now if I can just find some time???!!

Oh my goodness! My daughter's (never completed) dollhouse is in MY attic. I can see me and my granddaughter making a project of it together. You've put that "Daisy Cottage" touch on your dollhouse. I'm sure you'll find just the right finishing touches for the kitchen.

Very cute! I also love dollhouses and have been in the process of refurbishing the one I had as a child. I got it for Christmas when I was 10. My dad used to do income taxes at night to earn extra money and did one man's taxes in exchange for him building me a dollhouse from his "scrap" lumber. Like our real houses, they are always a work in progress.

Oh Missie - how SPECIAL YOUR dollhouse is!
What a treasure from your Dad!

OK...I think I want to move in...I've been unpacking my new home for 2 weeks now...and it doesn't look near as good as your sweet doll-house. I love how it is a sweet reminder of your Daisy Cottage...all the way from the red check chairs to the daisy's on the table...too sweet...and what a find with the fridge magnet...clever use!
BTW...I'm not sure if you have checked my blog for our BIG announcement...but we're going to be grandparents...(Lollie & Pop) in January...we're thrilled beyond words. If it's a little girl...I think I'll start shopping for a doll house for her and I to play with when she comes to visit!

I love dollhouses. In fact I collect furnitures and have lots of it. Unfortunally, here in Brazil we don't have many dollhouses to sell and when I find one either it is very expensive, or it is not the way I dream of.
I hope that someday I will return to USA and buy one. Yours is beautiful Have fun!!!

Oh my...what fun...I've been "toying" with the idea of putting a doll house together, as I never had one as a child either!
Hi...I just wanted you to know I've been a distant admirer of your blog but saw you in the book "Blogging for Bliss" and thought I would drop in and tell you so!

What a darling doll house! I have a large vintage one that I have been wanting to redo since I purchased it a couple of years ago. Yours is inspiring me!
I was wondering if your chairs were purchased with the fabric on them or did you give some of them a makeover?
Can't wait to see the further progression of your adorable little house!

Your dollhouse is coming along beautifully, Kim. It's so easy to get swept away into the teeny tiny world. A friend of mine has a dollhouse. She has staggering troubles in her family. She loves her dollhouse. She said everyone can be happy all the time and every day's a holiday.

Kim, you outdid yourself this time! If I could vote, this would be my favorite post of all time!
I have a dollhouse too...a vintage Strawberry Shortcake house but you have inspired me (surprise!) to want yet another one!
Post pictures if you do indeed get a dollhouse family...and whatever the case, this whimsical, fanciful, Daisy Cottage wouldn't be complete without Maggie, pots of daisies and lizards!!! ;)

Hello Kim, I love your doll house it is precious:)I made my daughter one years ago. I painted (white)an oval basket( blue inside)for a tub, can not remember about the faucets.(think it was a McDonald's toy, taken apart) A metal band-aid box for the potty, where the back lid lifted up and a safety pin to flush, the seat was a lid the appropriate size (upside down)for the bottom. Hot glued together and painted. Sink was a little wooden candle stick pedestal with a small bowl for the basin. Was on the look out at thrift stores for odd things that would fit together.I think I had as much fun making it as she did playing:)Have a great week. Hugs, Mary:)

I just got a dollhouse about a month ago through Craigs List - a real deal at $30. I haven't started on it yet, too many other things to take care of. But, come the cool days of Autumn, I am getting to work. Isn't it fun?
Posted by: Claudia | July 21, 2009 at 08:22 AM
That is adorable!
I don't know what kind of family you're looking to have move in but I just got my family in the form of peg dolls from www.gemmielou.etsy.com and they're adorable! They look just like my family which thrills my boys! They aren't a thrift store or yard sale price by any means but well worth it if you ask me. :)

Had to pop in to see your dollhouse furniture and read your article. Saw the gorgeous photos on Flickr (where I've been camping out lately). Your dollhouse is soooooo gorgeous, and of course reminds me of Daisy Cottage! You certainly have found some beautiful pieces for it. Have fun!! ♥

Kim - I LOVE YOUR BLOG! I recently discovered it and it has become an almost daily obsession to see what is happening at Daisy Cottage. I want to steal you away to Southern New Jersey to play at my house! BTW - I had the same EXACT red and white dollhouse chairs growing up... how my little doll family loved to sit in them next to the faux fireplace! I now feel the need to pull them from the attic, to my husband's utter horror. I miss my old dollhouse... I'm off to find a place for it in the spare bedroom... :)
Posted by: Susan | July 21, 2009 at 09:41 AM
Oh how fun! I loved the dollhouse my grandmother made me as a child...She used sturdy boxes for each room and wallpapered the walls, carpeted the floors...we used hankies for curtains...knitted tiny blankets...made furniture...it was so much fun.
This post just brought back all those memories!

Red and yellow. Why am I not surprised? Lol. It's adorable, Kim. I'm sure it will be a lovely dollhouse when you finish it.

After seeing your dollhouse, it all made sense to me. I got my granddaughter a real nice $100 complete dollhouse for Christmas. When I ask her, have you played with your dollhouse? Her reply is no. I was the one that needed the dollhouse. I have a plan of either bringing the dollhouse to Grandma's house of having one of my own. The dollhouse was what I needed. Inspiration from Kim, again. Thanks!

Oh Kim..you are too cute. It's a mini daisy cottage. My girls have a victorian doll house which I posted about once. I'll have to wait until they have outgrown their Polly Pocket house and I'll take it over...ha! thanks for the inspiration..

so precious... I think I have an identical house to yours (except it's pink!)... thanks for the inspiration! Have you seen the "Calico Critters" dollhouse families... I believe you can find them in Target Stores??? They are the sweetest little families of rabbits, cats, squirrels, etc. I bought a bunny family for my house and they are all dressed in such sweet little calico outfits! I wasn't able to find a 'human family" that I loved yet... and didn't want my house to sit empty... so these sweet little critters are keeping house for the moment! *hugs*

So delightful, Kim! Just made me smile the entire way through your post. I didn't have a dollhouse as a kid, but that didn't stop me from making furnishings from whatever scraps I could.

What fun!! When I was little I had a dollhouse and spent many hours playing with it, but then my family moved several states away and we gave my dollhouse to a little neighbor girl to keep from packing it. I guess at the time I had probably outgrown it, but now I WANT MY DOLLHOUSE BACK!!!! ha. I might just have to find me one like you did and play 'til my hearts content. :D
Posted by: Teri | July 21, 2009 at 12:09 PM
Oh Wow Kim! Your dollhouse is darling. I was wondering what it looked like.. how did I know it would be painted in daisy cottage colors :)
Mine is a work in progress, doubt it will be finished for several more months. I need help with the electricity and no time to read instructions. Most of my furniture has been stored for years but still in keeping with the 40's era I want. I have all my kitchen appliances except the stove and just trying to decide whehter I want a Roper or Aga.
I have lots of wallpaper and some extra so let me know if you like blue toile, yellow fancy print, cream/blue birds & berries, red poppies and green fern, among others.
It's time consuming but so much fun making selections for each room ~ just like a real home. It won't be a perfect house but will be created with lots of love. I also have dolls picked out to replicate our family.. including a "Grandma" doll like me (smile)
Have a fun day! Carole

My house is blue with white trim and this the doll house is white with blue trim....I have a few pieces too but I have not been actively collecting.
You gave me a terrific idea though.....I am a very visual person and can't seem to get my house just right~maybe I could practice on my dollhouse. Right now it is completely empty except for our family picture that stands in the door way..it look like a mini family that lives there~LOL

Kim, as much as I've enjoyed all of your posts, this one is the icing on the cake. I love the cheerful bright colors of your dollhouse and that red frame is adorable! I've always loved dolls and anything related to them. I have a collection of 18-inch dolls, and believe it or not, I have several rooms with furniture for them. They don't have a bathroom either, but they do have a kitchen with a cast-iron stove, table and chairs, pie safe and bread rack. A few years ago, I even found all the red-handled kitchen utensils. They were intended to be Christmas ornaments, but that didn't stop me from repurposing them. They're the perfect size for my dolls. Judging from the incredible response to your post, I guess I'm not the only woman who is still a little girl at heart! Let us know when your doll family moves in. Hugs, Terri

Hi Kim,
I bought a dollhouse a few years back...never had one has a child so decided it was time. ;-) Anyway, your post has inspired me to do something with the interior. The exterior was already painted a bright yellow, which I do love. I found it decorated for Christmas but the decorations were literally rotting off and falling all apart. So I made all new ones for it. So, my dollhouse is forever decorated for Christmas on the outside...it's perpetually Christmas time...but that's ok...I love it. :-) Thanks for sharing your darling little house...I love seeing how you are furnishing it. After seeing your sweet, happy chairs, I think I will continue with the bright colors inside since the person who lovingly made it started them on the outside. I have to figure out how to get the wallpaper off though...now that will be a challenge. I think I'll do a post on the house soon and when I do, I'm going to link back to one of your dollhouse posts and blog. You have such a sweet, caring spirit...and it truly comes out in your posts!
