My landscape collection is growing! As you can see, I still have space for a few more! It has been really fun to simply hang them as I bring them home, instead of keeping them waiting in a closet until I had the "right" amount. Each one of these is special and beautiful in its' own way and NONE of them cost more than $5. This office, which took on the life as a "vintage travel" room has been the easiest room to decorate. Once I knew the direction that I wanted it to go in, gathering the goods has been a blast! Vintage suitcases, hats, globes, yard sticks, walking canes... seemed to call my name and all were found in thrift shops and yard sales. I still want to find a little area rug, maybe a zebra one! Check out the funky lamp shade from Salvation Army...
I'm REALLY bad about measuring anything too - and you will note that the landscapes are not spaced evenly. The no-stress way this room has come together has been so nice. As soon as we throw "perfection" out the window we are having FUN, right? And that is what decorating should be ALL about!
I just love the way you have decorated this room!!!

Kim, your lack of "perfection" just couldn't be more perfect!!! That room looks great! I would just curl up in there and daydream all day. Vicky G.

I'm so envious of your thrift finds. I can never find anything like that at my stores. Just found your blog and love it. Great home. Great colors.

I love the fact that you have chosen pictures so many times may not have even gotten a second look. You not only have given each of them a second chance- But when they are all grouped together make such a beautiful collection! You are one of the most talented people i "know"! :)
Thanks for sharing your cozy home with all of us!!

I love this room. I also have a vintage travel room that is constantly in flux and change. I'd love to use some of your pics on my luggage web page

LMK if it's OK. Again, I looooove this room and the landscape paintings. Great job at hanging them too, they look perfect.

Oh Kim, I love that room, it is so comfy looking too. Guys would feel comfortable in there, your walls are an interesting color and I really love that lamp shade, and it matches your wall color, how cool is that!?! Have a great day, Cindy

Your office is just gorgeous! You have such a talent at decorating. Wish you could come spend a few days at my house and help me. I love some of the ideas from your room. The timing is perfect. Yesterday I decided to redo our library guestroom, sell the sofasleeper bed and make a daybed out of our daughter's antique iron bed (twin size). I'm going to repaint it wrought iron black and do lots of pillows. This winter, hopefully, my sweetheart will make a trundle to go underneath. Our room features things from different countries in the world as I have collected foreign dolls since childhood and we have had many missionary friends who have given me wonderful dolls and other things through the years. We have travelled in Mexico several times and love the things we brought back. I need to paint the walls a good color like your room.

Wonderful! You're right about perfection. I'm struggling with letting go right now.
Posted by: Anina | June 07, 2007 at 02:31 PM
Your room is so cosy. When I see a grouping like that on the wall, I stop and think where each one has been and what wall/room and family they belong to long ago. So happy that you are giving them another place on the wall instead of stuck in a store. Wonderful place to read a book or just stop and smell the roses.

Ah! Finally someone whose home is delightful and whom I respect said it! Perfection is not fun! It meeds to go straight out of the window!
When I discovered this, when I stopped worrying about how others perceived my humble home, I started having real fun with it.
I do not live grandly nor with fancy things yet I love each piece. I love my home. Perfection does not live here and I LOVE your home!!! Perfect is in the eyes of the beholder and to me, your home IS perfect just the way it is!

I love it!! Just this week I went on a hunt for vintage luggage - I found two very old Samsonite pieces at two separate thrift shops - and they match perfectly! And today - I found the most perfect blue old one - big - and the best part? It was $1!!!

And now that I look more carefully - I realize the first two pieces I bought are the large and medium size that go with your train case, and the blue one I bought today looks like the bottom one on the chair in the corner. :)

Now where have I been? I don't remember seeing this room at all, but I love it. Your collection of landscapes is great & I love your idea of getting rid of perfection with hanging them. I'm like that too...I hate to measure precisely. I'm a "eyeball" it kind of girl!

I love the theme for this room and your collection of landscapes fits in perfectly. I never measure when I hang things, but my husbnd is a stickler for it. That's why he usually insists on doing the hanging. He's a virgo - maybe that explains it!

What a great room! I didn't notice anything uneven in the display - besides, I can't stand perfect...I'm getting tired of all the magazine layouts that look like museums...I like real. Speaking of suitcases...I am on a break from priming & painting one from the thrift store. It was super ugly & dirty but the brown lining inside wasn't bad. It is a soft pink now & I think I may antique it up & tie on some vintage ribbon & buttons...it will store my vintage ephemera. I am also gonna put the little round tags back on it that said, "stockings, gloves" etc.
I wish I could find decent paintings for less than $5. I cheated & found some small floral oil paintings at a dollar type store...I'm painting the fake brown wood frames now...I think they are pretty darn cute for my girls room. I love this little store with the pinatas...I got some pretty bowls that look very vintage for only 98 cents & polka dot change purses! It reminds me of the Ben Franklin Dime store from childhood.

Oh thankyou, thankyou, I am so worried about my hallway. I want to hang a number of my own pastel paintings and you said it - throw perfection out the window and have FUN! I have been putting off doing this as I was worried it would not "look right" - well as we say in Australia - Bugger it! I am going to get them framed and put them down my hallway the way I bloody well like!
Thanks! Your room looks fantastic and I am so glad I found your blog! Thankyou for taking the time to do it for us.

What a wonderful room! You've certainly got the "knack," but then I think everyone who visits your blog already knew that. I haven't been reading your blog for too long, but from what I've seen of your home, the color of this room came as a little bit of a surprise--but I love it! Thanks for sharing!

This is another room of yours that I really love. I picked up a boook the other day titled something like...Flea Market Style. It reminded me of you and your talent.
It is not easy decorating with things from thrift stores and it not looking as though that's where everything came from. You, my dear, have such a talent for a collected look. As though you or your family have had these things forever, not just a week or two!

Very charming and cozy -- reminds me of lots of rooms mentioned in Enid Blyton's English series "Adventure" books -- like the "the Island of Adventure" -- rooms that invite armchair tourists and travellers to open a favorite book or an old atlas and look again .... and dream of distant shores and their own ideas of adventures!
Remember J.R.R. Tolkien's:
Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate
And though I oft have passed them by
A day will come at last when I
Shall take the hidden paths that run
West of the Moon, East of the Sun .....

By the way, if I gain 5 pounds this weekend, it is all YOUR fault! I made those cookies and they are too darned good. I swear I've eaten eight of them already. I never eat that many cookies!
Can't...resist...peanut butter and chocolate...

The whole room is fabulous. Everything goes together so well and each space compliments the next. I'm always wishing I had more wall space for more hanging, but I don't want more square footage to clean....or give up any of my windows. LOL Thank you for sharing your landscapes with us, Kim!

I just love this room...so serene...you've done a lovely job...I am loving the color, too...I love that the room has (to me) an air of mystery surrounding it...I don't know why I say that...but it does...I think b/c of the unknown...where has the luggage traveled, who carried the luggage, who were they traveling with OR were they alone???... the landscapes...who painted them...where were they painted and when??? what was the motivation???...the hat...what mysterous man hid behind that brim???...and the walking sticks...who's, where, and what's again...I just love what you've done with the items you collected...they work together like a good book...and I love that!! Thanks for sharing.

Kim, I love all your landscape paintings. I am drawn to them also and find them frequently at thrift and Goodwill stores, but have not known exactly what to do with them. Since most are original art, I think they should be treasured --- and that's what you have done. Thanks for a great idea. I love your room!
