Birdie Book
This blue birdie book was 50 cents at the thrift shop around the corner. "Everyday Birds" was written and illustrated by Gertrude E. Allen in 1943. Don't you just love the name "Gertrude"? I wonder if her friends called her "Gertie"?? My thrift shop find appears to be an old discarded library book from Georgia.
The cover and pages may be lovingly worn, but the writing and illustrations are simply endearing. I'm very happy to add Gertrude's "discarded" book to our family library. I'm sure that "Everyday Birds" will be enjoyed by the children in our family for years to come. :-)

That is a DARLING book! I envy your thrift store finds...I can never find anything quite as good.

Hi Kim
I love the little blue book. Old books are wonderful, aren't they?
The illustrations in your book are so sweet. It's definitely a Spring book!

I love my estate and thrift store finds and thinking about where they were before they were with me and what purpose did they serve. . .I posted a bunch of mine today.

I agree with you about the illustrations. They are really nice. The Better Homes garden book below the bird book is the first garden book I ever bought shortly after I was married.

I recently discovered your lovely blog. You have such a knack for decorating and tablescapes. Just beautiful. I noticed in a few posts that you have several milk glass pieces. I'm working on my milk glass collection and was wondering where you find most of your pieces.

What little works of art and all for 50 cents. I love it!

Goodness gracious - your lovely book is the same age as me! Do I look that good - I'll have to keep you guessing. Birds light up my garden - how static it would seem without their cheerful songs, and their antics at the feeders and drinking/bathing places tucked under the shrubs.

Andrew wants to come over to Daisy Cottage and enjoy this wonderful book with his Aunt Kim! What a great find. Don't you love the inside library date stamps. They remind me of my fun school days!!!

What a great find! I found one similar at a yard sale at couple of years ago that had a record that you could play and it identified the songs of various birds. My DS's friends (they are teens) love to play this record. Of course they find record players so vintage!

What a darling book! And I love the illustrations! And a definite bargain at only 50ยข (I'll bet Gertie would be surprised her work ended up in a thrift shop with such a price tag)! =)

What a wonderful find -- simply "meant-to-be" -- yes indeed! -- that dear little old book is in the right place -- and well-loved at Daisy Cottage! I just love children's books too!

Your bird book is just adorable. It sure brought back memories of the school library in my elementary school. I used to always choose books from a biography series on famous people: Madame Curie, Luther Burbank, Clara Barton, etc. Last weekend while browsing in an antique shop, I found a beautiful copy of Little Women that had the prettiest illustrated cover, and am kicking myself for not buying it!
